Nguyen Quoc Huy
Nguyễn Quốc Huy, born in 1971 in Hanoi, graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts and is a representative artist of the next generation within the tradition of Vietnamese lacquer painting. He chooses this traditional medium as his primary creative language, yet approaches it with a contemporary mindset, combining classical sơn ta techniques with modern spatial structures and lighting.
In Nguyễn Quốc Huy’s paintings, viewers encounter a world that is both tranquil and vibrant—where images of people, landscapes, and cultural symbols are distilled into fragments of memory and time. He pays particular attention to tonal nuance and the depth of lacquer surfaces. Layers of vermilion, black lacquer, gold, and silver are built up, polished, and refined until they shimmer subtly, creating sensuous yet restrained visual effects. His simplified, disciplined compositions allow each color plane to breathe as a rhythm of consciousness. For Nguyễn Quốc Huy, painting is a journey in search of stillness amid change, a way of rearticulating the beauty of Vietnam through the sensibility of an artist living between past and present.
